Christmas at The Mardale

Want to host your Christmas Party for 8 or more friends or work colleagues? We have a dedicated Christmas Menu available. Email christmas@themardaleinn.com or call us up to chat through options.

Over Christmas itself, the pub is open for drinks only from 12-2PM on Christmas Day. We're also open from noon on Boxing Day, again drinks only, through normal closing after our Boxing Day Charity Pub Quiz.

Our kitchen is open for meals on Christmas Eve and reopens on December 27th after a Christmas break. Our 'Eat' booking system shows all the options over the period. Please visit there or call us!

Community Owned & Community Run

After raising £400,000 to 'Save a Pub for the Valley', 'The Mardale Inn at St Patrick's Well' was purchased by over 500 members of Bampton Valley Community Pub in May 2022. The pub had been closed for 5 years and needed significant investment to secure its future.

As cash permitted, we reopened in a phased manner. We started with drinks only on July 1st 2022 and in late November 2022, with invaluable funding from The Prince's Countryside Fund, we reopened the kitchen.

Given amazing support from Inspiring Eden we refurbished all 6 of our bedrooms in 2023.  Visit our 'Sleep' page to learn more....

In 2025 we raised a further £50,000 from personal donors, Hyperfast Networks GB and Rural England Prosperity Fund administered by Westmorland & Furness Council along with Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership. This money recycled our aging roof and expanded our solar power to improve the sustainability of the pub and reduce our costs.

Come visit our refreshed pub, meet our friendly, professional team & welcoming localsenjoy the best in local Cumbrian ales, keg beers, wine, gins and food - and perhaps stay for a couple of days!

Visiting us

Our bar opening hours at The Mardale are:

  • Mon to Thurs - 4PM to 9/10PM

  • Fri & Sat - Noon to 10/11PM

  • Sun - Noon to 9/10PM

Note that we may close at the earlier time listed (ie 9PM) if nobody is in the bar an hour or so ahead of normal closing (ie 10PM). Please call ahead if you are going to be arriving in last 60 minutes of published opening!

As a 'community hub', we host a number of events at different times (see below) and we also serve food 7 days a week.

We are a small pub so booking ahead for a meal is a good idea. Reservations are available at the following times (the kitchen closes 60 mins after the last booking time):

  • Mon to Sat Evening - 5PM to 8PM (see below re Weds)

  • Fri & Sat Lunch - Noon to 2PM (+ Bank Holiday Mondays)

  • Sun - Noon to 3PM & 5PM to 7PM

From November through to end February 2026, we operate Winter Wednesdays. See our 'Eat' page for more details.

Click on the icons below for sample menus. Items on these samples are updated regularly to reflect availability of fresh ingredients so the menu on the day may not match 100%. Daily specials are also listed on the blackboard in the pub.

Planning to visit us lunchtime on a Monday to Thursday? The pub is not open at that time but you may buy a great coffee, sandwich or pasty etc at volunteer-run Bampton Valley Stores' just 100m away from the pub. In Winter, it is open from 930AM to 1230PM seven days a week.

Bampton is a small village of narrow lanes so we ask you to walk or cycle to visit us (check out our new dedicated Bike Hub facilities).

Please park considerately in respect of our neighbours if coming by car. A number of recommended parking places are on the map here - which are only 100 to 200 metres walk away.

Alternative parking areas slightly farther away include (we are a beautiful Valley for an evening stroll):

  • 3 cars in the layby just along from Bampton School House heading towards Haweswater

  • 4 cars by Bomby Green and the bridge to Bampton Grange

  • 6 cars by Chapel Bridge (over Haweswater Beck)

Email us at info@themardaleinn.com or call us on 01931 719202 with any questions.

Beer at The Mardale

Serving local real ales well, all brewed within 50 miles of the pub, is really important to us at The Mardale. That's why we are delighted to have been recognised and listed in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide for 2024, 2025 and now 2026.

To celebrate, and to thank our CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) friends who scored our beer so highly to get in, we're offering CAMRA members 40p discount per pint of real ale (on production of valid card).

Check out what's current and is coming up on our new 'Beer Board' (click on beer for more details about it).
